A first Approach to Tactile Maps and Web Contents for Visually Impaired and Blind People with a Sensory Supplementation System (Tactos)

Abstract : Inequality in the accessibility of IT tools prevents blind people from accessing all the available content and information. Digital inclusion for all people with disabilities has been studied for several years and tools have been developed to fill this gap. In the context of the UAP Project (Universal Access Platform), we developed a new version of a tactile sensory supplementation system called Tactos to allow the exploration of a computer screen by visually impaired and blind people. A user-centered approach has been used through the participation and collaboration of a research laboratory, a digital tools' company specializing in visual impairments as well as endusers, namely visually impaired and blind people. This article reports on the approach we took to develop and improve the Tactos system through contents we created : tutorials and maps. Interviews were conducted to understand how visually impaired and blind people get around the city and use technologies such as computers and smartphones. It allowed us to understand their daily lives. Thanks to the interviews, we adapted the system to their needs and their way of thinking. As a result, users have been enlisted in the design process.
